Testosterone...It's Not Just About The Muscle

Updated: May 31

The hormone testosterone is often associated with the development and maintenance of male physical characteristics such as muscle mass, deep voice, and facial hair. However, testosterone plays a much more complex role in the body, affecting various aspects of health and well-being in both men and women.

Testosterone has influence on bone density, red blood cell production, and muscle mass, as well as sex drive and fertility. It also affects mood, cognition, and our behavior. Multiple studies have shown that men with low levels of testosterone often experience symptoms of depression, fatigue, and irritability. This indicates that testosterone has a significant impact on mental health.

In addition to its role in physical and mental health, testosterone also plays a crucial part in social behavior. It influences social bonding and affiliation in both men and women, which may explain why it plays a key role in the development of romantic relationships.

With all that being said, this is what all men need to know. Testosterone is not just about the muscle. It is a hormone that influences a wide range of aspects of physical, mental, and social well-being. It is important for men to know their baseline levels in order to correctly assess, along with other symptoms present, their need for low testosterone treatment in order to optimize their overall health and performance.
